My name is Joseph Swider, otherwise known as "Cracker Joe". I was Born in Hartford and have lived my whole life here in CT. I've always had a fascination with art since I was a wee little boy. I started my professional tattoo career at the age of 18, when I started my apprenticeship at Devilles tattoo in Manchester, CT.
My influences are Tony Ciavarro, Joe Capo, Jimmy Litwalk, and most importantly the very talented artists that I have the privilege of working with today. Most of my artwork is done either with Tattoo ink or colored pencil, but I'm constantly trying new things.
I have been Tattooing now for about 9 years or so, and I hope to continue learning and developing my technique along with my trade.
Here are a few examples explaining the process of designing a tattoo:
Semi-Traditional swallow holding burning dollar bill and burning rose- Ryan came to me after checking through my portfolio online and in the shop because he was looking to get this specific style of tattoo.
He gave me the basic Idea just by simply telling me what he had an idea of in his mind, and told me to give my interpretation of what I heard. When he saw the drawing he told me it was a whole lot better than he had ever imagined it would be, and he was even more impressed when I completed the job.
The Tattoo as a whole took approximately 7 hours to complete. It was done in two sessions. First the outline, and then the color. I consider this to be some of my best work ever.
Two angels on chest with heart and triple x's in center (straight edge)- When Tom, a very good friend of mine, came to me with his idea for this tattoo, he gave me just a basic outline of what he wanted by just naming off all the elements he wanted in his tattoo. I knew that he would give me all the artistic freedom and trust to create a really spectacular chest piece for him. What people don't seem to understand is that if you put your trust in a good experienced artist, it will leave open so many options for making the best possible design for the customer. Honestly its the people who are very controlling about what they want and very picky, that usually walk out of the shop with the worst pieces.
We had started off with the X's and then later had come to the conclusion of adding to them. His original Idea was to have a good angel and a bad angel falling. Then I said well why don't we make it so he has already fallen and is lying there dead. He loved the idea so I drew it up for him.
Then, on the day of the tattoo, I came up with the whole idea for the heart and the background to kind of bring the whole thing together. Every piece looks so much better when you finalize it with a background. It gives a setting and a complimentary scheme of color and contrast.
The tattoo as a whole took about 20 - 30 hours to complete. To this day he still thanks me for it every time I talk with him. I am very proud of this piece and I hope that people see it and are inspired to get more along the same lines as this one.
